My Three Favorite Movies

My wife, Tamar, recently asked me what my all time favorite movies are. She knew that on the top of my list is “Chinatown,” the 1974 movie starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. The acting by Nicholson and Dunaway is superb. And the plot is full of meaningful twists. So I decided to get AI’s help. To my surprise, Chinatown didn’t make ChatGPT’s list of best films. It had the predictable disclaimer that I asked it a subjective question, etc. But when I followed up and asked why Chinatown wasn’t included it said that had the list been a little longer that Chinatown would have made it. I then asked about another favorite  of mine, “Wizard of Oz.” Frankly, those flying monkeys scared me when I was a kid. But as I grew older, the storytelling and the songs hooked me for life. Chat GPT said: “The Wizard of Oz (1939) is absolutely one of the greatest films of all time, just in a very different lane than something like Chinatown. It’s a landmark in cinema history.” So I have eclectic tastes in movies.

Another favorite of mine is “2001: A Space Odyssey.” This 1968 film by Stanley Kubrick is a classic. But back in 1973 when I took a friend who I was dating in high school to the movie, she thought it was a bore. An amazing scene in the movie is when an ape using a bone as a tool, flings it upward and it morphs into a satellite millions of years later. And cheers erupted in suburban Chicago when the HAL 9000 computer revealed that it was programmed in Urbana, Illinois, where I would go to college.
